Wednesday's Excuse

Call received by the boss on a Sunday. "Dude, I am still trippin', I dropped some LSD on Friday night. There is no way I can work today." Well, you have to admire his honesty. I wonder if he is related to the guy who was late for work because "my drug dealer showed up late."
We can shake our head and think we would never give an excuse of this nature, but this type of an excuse can cause an employer problems. Is the honest, LSD tripping employee driving a company car? Are they working around children or volatile materials? Once management becomes aware of this, it may have a duty to act. Is an offer of substance abuse treatment an option? Perhaps. In a case of this nature there are variables that come into play and require care to avoid a claim for perceived as disability discrimination.
